There are two basic types of popups. The first type consists of advertisements that pop up on websites you view. This type may or may not contain spyware. Many websites use popup or popunder ads to draw attention to their products and services.

A Google study released this week says fake anti-virus popups account for 15% of all malware on the Internet. Fake AV is when a window pops up online warning that spyware or a virus has been detected and prompts users to install an antivirus update
